The other Michigan school and North Carolina

After watching the North Carolina Tar Heels slaughter the Michigan State Spartans to win their fifth National Championship on Monday night, it reminded me of something that happened 16 years ago. That was when the Tar Heels played the other Michigan school for the National Title.

The Tar Heels headed into this game by defeating Kansas in the National Semi Final  but not before disposing of East Carolina, Rhode Island, Arkansas and Cincinnati on their way to the Final Four. The Wolverines defeated Kentucky in overtime in the other National Semi Final match up after defeating Coastal Carolina, UCLA, George Washington and Temple on their road to the Final Four..

The 2000 Orange Bowl

It still stands as one of the best Bowl games of the last decade as the No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide battled the No. 8 Michigan Wolverines. Let’s take a look at what makes this such a historic game.

The first quarter was a defensive struggle as neither team was able to put any points on the board. Both teams saw lengthy drives come to an end with punts or turnovers.

The Crimson Tide got the scoring started in the second quarter when Shaun Alexander scored on a five yard run. Ryan Pflugner added the extra point to put Alabama up, 7-0.

A few minutes later, Alexander reached the end zone again, this time from six yards out. Pflugner added the P.A.T. to put the Crimson Tide up, 14-0

The Wolverines finally broke the goose egg before halftime as Tom Brady connected with David Terrell for a 27 yard pass.

End of the Season Grades

The 2008-2009 basketball season has come to an end for the Wolverines as they were bounced by the Oklahoma Sooners in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. Never the less, the Maze and Blue had their best season in a decade as they finished 21-14. Let’s run through the team and give out those final grades.

Michigan - Clemson

The Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO will be the setting when the No. 10 seed Michigan Wolverines battle to No. 7 seed Clemson Tigers in the first round of the NCAA tournament.  Tip off is scheduled for just after 7 p.m. on Thursday night. This is the first meeting between the two schools since November of 1998, when the Wolverines edged out the Tigers 59-56.

Big Ten Tournament Predictions

The 2009 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament gets under way tomorrow in Indianapolis and many questions will be answered. Can the favored Michigan State Spartans win the tournament and nab themselves a number two seed in the NCAA tournament? Will Purdue show everyone in the conference they are for real and a force to be reckoned with? Can teams like Michigan, Minnesota and even Northwestern make enough noise to get a NCAA tournament bid? Let’s take a look at what I see happening this weekend in Indianapolis.

Wolverines head to Minneapolis in a must win situation

After the tough loss at Wisconsin last Saturday, the Maze and Blue are truly a bubble team in regards to making the NCAA tournament. The Wolverines will play the Minnesota Golden Gophers this Saturday and must win to avoid having their bubble burst.

What does 2009 hold for the Maze and Blue, Part II

If you caught last week’s post, you read that I have the 2009 Michigan Wolverines at 5-1 at the halfway point of next season with a 2-1 Big Ten record. It’s now time to see how the Wolverines will fare in the second half of the season.

What does 2009 hold for the Maze and Blue?

A few weeks ago, the Michigan Wolverines completed their 2009 schedule by adding Division 1-AA Delaware State as the fourth and final non- conference opponent.  Now that the schedule is set, I thought it would be interesting to run through each game and predict where the Wolverines will finish next season in a two part series.

The season opens up Western Michigan visiting the Big House. This is not a sure win for the Wolverines like it has been in past meetings with the Broncos. WMU is coming off a 9-4 season that ended with a blow out loss to Rice in the Texas Bowl. Never the less, the Broncos will easily be a top five team in a solid MAC next season and should be able to hang with the Wolverines. In the end, I see the Wolverines winning a very competitive game 24-14.

Next up is date with the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame at Michigan Stadium.

Wolverines fall to Spartans

Before a ruckus crowd of 13,751 at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, the Michigan Wolverines fell to the No. 9 Michigan State Spartans 54-42 in what was a pivotal Big Ten game for both teams

It was a game Wolverine fans had circled on their calendar for months but in the end, their in state rival continued their dominance within the state of Michigan. It’s a dominance that the Spartans have held for nearly a decade as they have won 16 of the last 19 meetings between the two teams.

The Spartans took an 11-10 lead halfway through the first half and never looked back. The win improved the Spartans to a7-0 on the road this season.

“It speaks to the toughness of our guys,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said.

With the win, the Spartans now boast a 20-4, 10-2 in Big Ten play.

Michigan fairs well on National Signing Day

National Signing Day 2009 is in the books and the Michigan Wolverines recruiting class ranked in seventh in the country coming in only behind Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, USC, Texas and Florida State and ahead of North Carolina, Georgia and Florida to round out the top ten. Conference wise, the Wolverines came in second, behind Ohio State and ahead of Michigan State, Penn State and Illinois to round out the top five. Let’s take a look at the brightest and best of the Wolverines 2009 class.

William Campbell, defensive tackle from Cass Tech High School in Detroit, MI tops the list. Campbell, the only five star Michigan recruit, stands at 6’5 and weighs in at 317 lbs.

Second on the list is Vladimir Emilien, safety from Lauderhill Plantation High School in Lauderhill, FL.
