Player Spotlight: Zack Novak

The Michigan basketball season has been full of ups and downs. Through it all, the Wolverines have been lead by their two top players, Manny Harris and DeShawn Sims. But there is another player that is enjoying a very productive season for the Maze and Blue and that’s freshmen guard Zack Novak.

Novak, who stands 6’5 and weighs in at 210 lbs., has fit in very well with head Coach John Beilein's offensive scheme this season. And some basketball insiders around the country had seen the writing on the wall before this season started.

"Novak is an outstanding catch-and-shoot wing player," ESPN.com national recruiting director Bob Gibson said. "He appears to be an ideal player for coach Beilein’s style of play."

The Chesterton, IN native left his mark in his hometown as well.

Maze and Blue invade Super Bowl XLIII

This Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals battle the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL and the Michigan Wolverines will be well represented. Nine former players and/or coaches are members of either the Cardinals or the Steelers. So let’s take a look at the Wolverine Alum involved in the big game.

Michigan @ Penn State Preview

Penn State Arena

Tonight in University Park, PA, the 14-5 Penn State Nittany Lions host the 13-5 Michigan Wolverines in a pivotal Big Ten match-up. Both teams have struggled as of late and both teams are trying to position themselves at getting a NCAA tournament bid.

Wolverines-Buckeyes circa 1997

When the Wolverines ran the table and won the National Title in 1997, they played some nail bitters throughout the season, including close home wins against Notre Dame and Iowa along with a tough road win at Wisconsin. But none of these games would be more emotional or more personal then playing their arch rival Ohio State. So, we take a trip down memory lane and revisit November 22, 1997 when the Wolverines hosted the Buckeyes with a trip to Pasadena on the line.

The defenses dominated most of the first half as neither team could get on the board in the 1st quarter. With less than two minutes remaining in the 1st quarter, Wolverines defensive lineman Eric Wilson drilled Buckeyes quarterback Stanley Wilson, causing a fumble that fellow Wolverine lineman Glen Steele would recover.

The Top Ten of the Big Ten

With most of the Big Ten teams near the halfway point of the season, I thought it would be interesting to rank the top ten players in the Big Ten right now so without further of due, let’s get started.

Who will lead the way in re-establishing the storied Michigan “D”

Back in mid December, Scott Shafer resigned as defensive coordinator of the Michigan Wolverines. After resigning, head coach Rich Rodriguez released a statement: "Scott and I agreed that moving in a different direction was in the best interest of the program. I appreciate Scott's hard work on behalf of Michigan football the past year. He is a good football coach, a good person and a true professional. We wish him well in the future."

After an impressive start, where does the Wolverines season go from here….

With the Wolverines sitting at 7-2 through nine games this season, the excitement in Ann Arbor and in the entire metro Detroit area for that matter is mounting.

Looking at the remainder of the 2009 schedule, I thought it would be fun to predict each remaining game and see hypothetically where this team will finish record wise. Will they have enough quality wins to secure a bid in the NCAA tournament?

Michigan - Texas

With the 2008 NCAA Bowl season just around the corner and the Michigan Wolverines not participating in a bowl game for first time in 34 years, I thought it would be as good of a time as any to relive one of Michigan’s most exciting bowl games.

The 2005 Rose Bowl (held for the 2004 season) pitted the No. 4 Texas Longhorns against the No. 12 Michigan Wolverines. This game was the coming out party for Texas QB Vince Young and propelled them to beat South California the following year in the Rose Bowl to win the National Championship. Michigan on the other hand was propelled, to well, the Alamo Bowl the following season where they lost to Nebraska.

Decade of Despair Could End This Season for U-M Men’s Hoops

With the Michigan Men’s basketball team season in full swing, the Wolverines are poised to make a competitive run at a Big Ten Championship and more importantly, securing a berth in the NCAA Tournament, a feat that has eluded them since 1998.

If coach Jim Beilein and this year’s Wolverines do in fact surpass the pre-season expectations and achieve a tourney spot or better yet a Big Ten Title, it will be large in part due to the play of the two stars on this team; sophomore guard Corperryale "Manny" Harris and junior forward DeShawn Sims.
